How to keep local database in sync with API

Basically, the app will connect to an API for sending data back and forth and my question is how to deal with the data locally? Do you keep a local database which is kept in sync with the API or do you everything over the HTTPS and no data is kep on the device? Mind you, this is not a service or anything, this app will be for my own use only, but as it is my first app I'd like to use as learning tool. Another question is, if I'm using a local database, could it be non-sql? (the API uses MongoDB and I'd rather keep the same data structure).

Lastly, if anyone could point out good tutorials on how to write an app that communicates with an API would be much appreciated. My language of choice is Swift by the way.

    Many thanks
